Solid Earth Uplift Due To Contemporary Ice Melt Above Low?Viscosity Regions of the Upper Mantle

چکیده
Glacial isostatic adjustment explains topographic change in formerly and currently glaciated regions, but the role of small (?100s km) regions unusually low-viscosity mantle is poorly understood. We developed viscoelastic models with upper mantle, measured effect these on solid earth uplift resulting from contemporary surface ice melt. found viscous occurring decadal timescales above region, at rates comparable to or larger than those elastic response age melting. find that are sensitive location, dimensions, viscosity largest uncertainty likely comes region's horizontal extent. Rapid ground can impact dynamics if region located close an sheet margin, as for Antarctica Greenland.

Reactive infiltration of hydrous melt above the mantle transition zone
[1] Seismic studies repeatedly image a low‐velocity layer overlying the mantle transition zone in tectonic settings ranging from subduction zones to continental cratons. This layer has been hypothesized to result from the presence of a dense partial melt formed by dehydration melting as relatively wet transition zone material is advected by convection currents into the low‐water‐solubility uppe...
متن کاملTrapped Melt in the Josephine Peridotite: Implications for Permeability and Melt Extraction in the Upper Mantle
Tabular dunites in the Josephine peridotite of southwestern Oregon represent conduits for melt extraction from the upper mantle. The amount of melt trapped within these channels during cooling and exhumation of the peridotite massif was calculated using a mass-balance approach. These calculations suggest that no more than 0·1^0·2 vol. % melt could have been trapped within these dunites after cr...
متن کاملThe contemporary degassing rate of 40Ar from the solid Earth.
Knowledge of the outgassing history of radiogenic (40)Ar, derived over geologic time from the radioactive decay of (40)K, contributes to our understanding of the geodynamic history of the planet and the origin of volatiles on Earth's surface. The (40)Ar inventory of the atmosphere equals total (40)Ar outgassing during Earth history. Here, we report the current rate of (40)Ar outgassing, accesse...
متن کاملBeta Regio, Venus: Evidence for uplift, rifting, and volcanism due to a mantle plume
Geophysical data have led to the interpretation that Beta Regio, a 2000×25000 km wide topographic rise with associated rifting and volcanism, formed due to the rise of a hot mantle diapir interpreted to be caused by a mantle plume. We have tested this hypothesis through detailed geologic mapping of the V-17 quadrangle, which includes a significant part of the Beta Regio rise, and reconnaissance...
متن کاملPreferential Assimilation Due to Melt-rock Reaction in the Lunar Mantle: a Laboratory and Ophiolite Field
Introduction: Assimilation has been called upon in numerous occasions to explain various petrologic and geochemical observations of the igneous rocks on the Moon. A well known example is the assimilation of ilmenite-bearing late cumulates (and KREEP) to the low Ti primary magmas at shallow levels, that has been used to explain the high Ti magmas observed on the lunar surface [1]-[3]. An alterna...
